DIPLOMACY. The confidential discussions on the problem of the use of GM organisms in the Third World

GMO, hope or nightmare?

The Holy See has not yet expressed an official position on genetically modified organisms (GMO), but because of its topicality and delicacy the subject is already on the agenda of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the Vatican body which deals with such matters. Presumably there will then be a statement on biotech from the Department, not least to avoid possible contradictory statements from different episcopates on the question. The GMO issue has, however, been studied by the Pontifical Academy for Life, in the volume ‘Animal and Vegetable biotechnologies. New frontiers and new responsibilities’, published in 1998. It is to be noted also that in 2001, Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, then Permanent Observer to FAO, published a piece in ‘International Social Affairs’ with the title ‘Biotechnologies: a hope to combat hunger in the world?’.
