The last Pope saint

by Andrea Tornielli

Next 4 August will be the hundredth anniversary of the election to the throne of Peter of Pius X, the last Pope canonized by the Church. And taking a leading part in the celebrations obviously are the town, the parish and the Pro Loco of Riese Pio X, in the province of Treviso, the Pontiff’s birthplace. First on the centenary schedule, on 2 June, was a conference on the relevance of Pius X and a concert at which music composed in honor of Pope Sarto by Lorenzo Perosi was given its first performance. In the course of the conference Dr. Alejandro M. Diéguez, of the Vatican Secret Archive spoke about the papers he has studied relating to the so-called “segreteriola”, the private secretariat set up by the Venetian Pontiff to provide quicker and less formal reply to the hundreds of letters addressed to him. Professor Danilo Veneruso set the figure of Pope Sarto in its historical context.
