Dear Children,
On the occasion of my apostolic visit to Austria, I am glad to be able to address in particular you who take an active part in the initiatives of the Pontifical Work of Missionary Childhood. I thank you from my heart for the little letters and drawings that you decided to give me as mark of your affection and your closeness to my mission. In them those feelings of faith and of love are expressed for which Jesus so loved small children and welcomed them with open arms, pointing them out as example for his disciples: «For of such», he said, «is the Kingdom of God» (Mk 10, 14).
I want to tell you that I much appreciate your commitment to the Missionary Childhood. I see in you small co-workers in the service that the Pope renders to the Church and to the world: you give me support with your prayer and also with your commitment to spread the Gospel. There are in fact so many children who still don’t know Jesus. And unfortunately there are as many without the necessities of life: food, health care, education; many lack peace and tranquillity. The Church has special concern for them, especially through the missionaries; and you, too, feel called to offer your contribution, both in person and as a group. Friendship with Jesus is too beautiful a gift to keep for oneself! Those who receive this gift feel the need to pass it to others; and in this way the gift, shared, doesn’t grow less but multiplies! Go on as you are! You are growing and soon you will become adolescents and young people: don’t lose your missionary spirit! Keep a faith always clear and genuine, like that of Saint Peter.
Dear small friends, I entrust you all to the protection of Our Lady. I pray for you, for your parents and brothers and sisters. I pray for your missionary groups and your educators, and to all I give heartfully the Apostolic Blessing.
