Bishop Mauro Piacenza, who is 61 and comes from Genoa, has been President of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Property of the Church since October 2003. The Holy See’s “minister of cultural property”, ordained priest in 1969, appointed canon of Genoa cathedral by Cardinal Joseph Siri in 1986, performed his mission in the Congregation for the Clergy from 1990, was appointed head of office in 1997 and undersecretary in 2000. Since August 2004 he has also been President of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology. The article published here is an ample précis of the talk given by Monsignor Piacenza last year at the Cistercian abbey of Casamari as part of the “10th Course in Christian art and iconography” organized by the “Il Baglio” Association of Palermo, in collaboration with the “Disegno” Cultural Association of Padua. Monsignor Piacenza will also speak at the 11th edition of the Course - on the theme “Dulcis praesentia” – to take place in Loreto from 27 July to 1 August.
