How worthy of praise, how sweet to venerate is this famous father. Erstwhile simple friar of the Order of Saint Dominic, who was a diligent friend of Christ, he taught with honor, indeed was considered the chief of scholars. Then he was made Master General of the friars. A man of great learning, he then became cardinal of [Santa] Sabina, and with joy they gave him the title the two sees of Ostia and Velletri. He was a gem of wisdom as legate in Hungary.
He then became pater patrum, lord of the world, glory of the friars. It was rightly said, in name and deed, Benedict [Blessed]. He was born in Treviso and came here to Perugia in the first year of his pontificate; he governed with justice all things subjected to him; in the ninth month he was downed by the sword of death. Miracles make a saint of this great man, for to those who are worthy of it he dispenses the help of grace with innumerable signs. You that read keep in mind: the year one thousand three hundred and four was in course, when this meek man departed. This happened on the sixth day of July.
