Mother Teresa with John Paul II among the poor of Calcutta in 1986

I have stupendous memories of Mother Teresa through attending mass at her community during her not infrequent stays in Rome.
She stayed for a long period during the Synod in which she took part, lodging at the then “Donum Mariae House” on the corner of the Holy Office. I was present at the inauguration and I saw how she “steered” the Pope, getting him go and bless the second floor as well.
But for me it was a thrilling privilege that she missed a flight connection, the day of the funeral of Indira Gandhi. The Mother was in America and her flight was delayed; so that she arrived in Rome when the Air India flight had already left. I was boarding with the Italian delegation on an airforce plane when I was told about it and it was a joy to invite her to join us, together with another nun.
They were unforgettable hours, but I was even more moved by the arrival. At the airport people – even the soldiers in uniform - greeted her with affectionate respect. And we went for a brief rest at our New Delhi embassy. Mother Teresa took me by the arm and led me into the garden to recite the rosary. A heavenly moment.
She didn’t come back with us because there was serious unrest among the Indian people and she was asked to stay to use her influence to bring about calm.
